Family Matters: Why I Love Family Photography

There’s something incredibly special about family photography. It’s not about perfect poses or everyone smiling at the camera—it’s about connection, emotion, and capturing the moments that matter most. The ones you’ll look back on years from now and feel all over again.

As a photographer, I’ve worked in many genres, but nothing compares to the heart found in a family session. There’s laughter, chaos, quiet hugs, wild toddlers, and tender glances between parents—and all of it tells a story. Your story.

What makes family photography so powerful is its authenticity. These moments are real. They aren’t staged or overly styled. They’re the everyday magic: a tiny hand in yours, a spontaneous burst of laughter, the way your kids look at you when they forget a camera is there.

Photographs become part of your family’s legacy. They remind us where we came from and who we’ve grown to be. I feel so honored every time a family invites me in to document a chapter of their journey.

Because in the end, family really does matter—and your memories deserve to be captured with love.

I have been working with growing families for many years now and this has easily become my favourite subject to work with. Here are some tips and tricks when working with families...

Quick Tips for Family Photographers

1. Make it playful. Turn your session into a game—kids respond best to fun!

2. Stay flexible. Go with the flow and embrace the chaos—it’s part of the magic.

3. Use prompts, not poses. “Whisper a secret” gets better smiles than “say cheese.”

4. Focus on connection. Capture the in-between moments, not just the perfect ones.

5. Keep talking. Encourage, praise, and guide gently—it keeps everyone at ease.

What Should We Wear for Family Photos?

One question I’m always asked is, “What should we wear for our family session?” And it’s a great one—because what you wear has a huge impact on the overall feel of your images.

When styling family photo sessions, I always recommend starting with a colour palette like the one I posted below, this session is the perfect example. Here, we used a warm, earthy palette with creamy neutrals, soft taupe, and rich browns. These tones not only complement the natural surroundings but also ensure the focus stays on what matters most: your connection.

Why this palette works:

• It’s neutral, timeless, and versatile for every season.

• The tones compliment all skin types beautifully.

• Nothing clashes or distracts from the emotion in the images.

Tips for choosing outfits:

• Avoid clashing colours or bold patterns. If you are going to add a pattern in the mix try and keep it only on one person.

• Think coordination, not matching. Each outfit should complement the others without being identical.

• Start with one outfit you love, then build around it using similar tones and textures.

The result? A gallery that feels soft, natural, and completely you. Your clothing shouldn’t compete with your connection.

Quick Tips for Whole Fam!

Family Photography Tips – Quick & Sweet!

1. Keep it fun! Let kids play and interact naturally—those candid moments are gold.

2. Coordinate, don’t match. Choose a color palette, not identical outfits.

3. Golden hour magic. Shoot an hour after sunrise or before sunset for dreamy light.

4. Get close. Capture connection—hugs, laughs, and snuggles tell the story.

5. Relax! The best photos happen when everyone’s just being themselves.
